Students looking for a university experience with a special focus on calculus should apply to the Tapia Math-Science Scholars (TMSS) program at Rice University, which runs from July 6 through August 1, 2015. Applications are due by Friday, May 8.

This innovative summer residential program is for HISD high school students who are interested in mathematics, science, and engineering. This advanced curriculum and integrative program includes sessions with Rice professors, including Professor Richard Tapia.

Professor Tapia, who directs the Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity in Education at Rice, is a mathematician in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics. He is internationally known for his research in mathematical sciences and his leadership in education and outreach programs.

Students who are accepted will live in a residence hall on the Rice campus, with lodging, meals, and tuition provided at no cost. Counselors will also live in the dorms with students and serve as guides and chaperones. Besides attending lectures, students will participate in an applied-math research project. Forty high-school students will be divided into eight teams of five students each. At the end of four weeks, each team will present their research project at the Tapia Math-Science Scholars Research Symposium.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least a high-school sophomore
  • Must have completed at least three years of math classes by May 2015
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0
  • Must have a “B” grade or better in all math and science classes
  • Must be planning to take calculus in the fall of 2015

High school seniors who have been accepted to a college or university prior to the application deadline are also eligible to apply.

Applications are due by Friday, May 8, 2015, and can be accessed here. Students will be notified of acceptances on Friday, May 18. A TMSS welcome reception and orientation will take place on Wednesday, May 27.
